Plastic Waste Workshops

The Plastic Prayer Flags Project- Community project devised when the plastic bags stuck in trees by the roadsides reminded me ironically of Tibetan prayer flags. I have been collecting plastic bags since 2010, these are then collaged and sewn together to create up-cycled textile pieces, coloured “Prayer Flags” emblazoned with the brands and logos of our time, as opposed to mantras or references to the five elements of traditional prayer flags.
This project has gradually been expanding beyond plastic bags to use other street and beach trash found and collected over the years.

My intention is to take art outside of the “white cube” space, engaging with the local community including those who would not normally go to an art gallery. Through these workshops I seek opportunities to engage the community in art as activism.
